Let Your Haters Report to Headquarters

The Other Side of Shining Without Apology

Note from Andrea: Last week, we explored how to receive recognition with grace through the Name, Claim and Reframe® process. But there's another side to shining your light brightly - it inevitably attracts those who might not celebrate your brilliance. This continuation of our "Own Your Light" series addresses that challenge.

"Not everyone is going to like you because your spirit irritates their demons." - Denzel Washington

Have you ever noticed them? Those people who consistently watch what you're doing, yet you sense they don't actually support your work or message? They're like silent observers, perhaps collecting material to share with others or even critique behind closed doors. We all have them in our lives - those who seem to keep tabs on our journey not out of admiration, but out of something else entirely. The "reporters to headquarters," if you will.

The Freedom in Not Caring

Here's a REFRAME: Their opinion about you is none of your business.

When you truly embrace this idea, something profound shifts. Many of us carry a weight we don't even recognize - the constant, subtle worrying about what these watchers might be thinking or saying about us. But when we finally let go of managing their perceptions, that burden suddenly seems... irrelevant. Some people simply can't recognize brilliance that challenges their comfort zone. Their perspective is limited by their own fears, their own stories, their own unfinished business.

The Lighthouse Doesn't Dim Its Light

You don't need to convince everyone of your worth. The people meant to see your light will be naturally drawn to it - just as ships find their way to a lighthouse in the darkness. The lighthouse doesn't wonder if the ships appreciate its beam. It doesn't dim its light when certain vessels approach. It simply stands tall and shines consistently, fulfilling its purpose regardless of who's watching or why.

Think about the last time you felt watched or judged by someone who wasn't truly supporting you. Perhaps it was a colleague who seemed to monitor your success with an edge of criticism. Maybe it was someone from your past who still follows your journey with what feels like skepticism rather than support.

  • How much energy did you spend wondering what they were thinking?

  • How often did you adjust your expression - even slightly - because of their perceived judgment?

Where to Direct Your Energy

Instead of worrying about those who watch from a distance with questionable intentions, redirect your energy toward those who celebrate your growth rather than those who question your journey.

Ask yourself:

·       Who genuinely celebrates when you succeed?

·       Who offers constructive feedback from a place of love?

·       Who makes space for you to be authentically yourself?

These are your people. These are the ones deserving of your energy and attention. When you shine without apology (as we discussed last week), you'll inevitably attract both admirers and critics. That's the natural consequence of being visible and making an impact. The key is to focus on those who appreciate your beacon while letting the others "report to headquarters" if they must.

The Practical Freedom Practice

The next time you notice someone "reporting to headquarters" about your life or work, try this simple practice:

1.     Notice the awareness of their watching

2.     Silently acknowledge: "Their opinion of me is none of my business"

3.     Refocus on creating value for those who genuinely connect with your message

This isn't about blocking everyone who disagrees with you - healthy challenge helps us grow. Rather, it's about releasing the need to manage others' perceptions, especially when those perceptions come from people who aren't invested in your wellbeing.

Continuing Your Lighthouse Journey

Last week, we explored how a lighthouse doesn't dim its light when ships approach - it stands tall and shines consistently. This week, we're recognizing that not all ships appreciate that light. Some might even be uncomfortable with its brightness. But just as the lighthouse doesn't adjust its beam based on which ships are in the harbor, you don't need to dim your brilliance because of watchers who might not appreciate it.

Stand in your light. The right people will find their way to your shore. And as for the others? Let them report whatever they want to headquarters. Their reports say more about them than they ever could about you.

Sending out love and light!
